­Ringtone turned patent holding company, Vringo has expanded its ongoingpatent lawsuits against ZTE to the company's Australian subsidiary.The lawsuit filed in the Federal Court of Australia in the New SouthWales registry, alleges infringement by ZTE Australia of Australian StandardPatents AU 2005/212,893 and AU 773,182.The patents in suit relate to telecommunications infrastructure equipment and mobile devices. The ZTE products in the lawsuit are reported to include base station and serverinfrastructure used in mobile networks and also a number of 4G mobile devices.Vringo has existing lawsuits against ZTE in the UK and France.

­The first four satellites in the O3b medium Earth orbit (MEO) constellation,operated by O3b Networks, are ready to be shipped to the Guiana Space Center inFrench Guiana.They will leave Thales Alenia Space's Rome facility in early April, and willbe launched by Arianespace, using a Soyuz launcher. The second batch of foursatellites will also be launched in 2013, and the third batch during the firsthalf of 2014.Positioned at an altitude of 8,063 kilometers, four times closer to the earththan geostationary satellites, these Ka-band satellites will offer high speed,low cost, low-latency Internet and telecommunications services in emergingmarkets. ­Semiconductor stockpiles held by chip suppliers increased during the firstquarter of 2012, but the rise in inventory for a second straight quarter wasdriven by the anticipation of higher demand from customers, according to an IHSiSuppli Inventory Insider Market Brief report.Total semiconductor inventory as a percentage of suppliers' revenueamounted to 50.0 percent in the first quarter, up from 47.8 percent in thefourth quarter last year and from 46.1 percent in the third, as shown in thefigure below. But while inventory grew during the last two quarters, the reasonsbehind the expansions for each of the two periods and what they implied for themarket couldn't be more different."In the fourth quarter, inventory rose among suppliers because of uncertainmacroeconomic conditions such as the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, leading toan overall decline in the worldwide demand for semiconductors," said SharonStiefel, semiconductor inventory analyst at IHS."And while inventory rose during the fourth quarter for semiconductorsuppliers, chip stockpiles fell at the same time among customers, indicating apaucity in demand. In contrast, the higher inventory numbers among semiconductorsuppliers for the first quarter of 2012 represent a signal of better things tocome. There was an increasing level of inventory both among chip suppliers andcustomers, indicating that both the supply and demand sides of the businessbelieve that the environment in the electronics market has turned positive."A Tale of Two QuartersA look at customer inventory trends in the fourth quarter of 2011 reveals abroad-based decrease in stockpiles among major semiconductor purchasers.For instance, customer inventory held by the electronics distributor segmentfell to 36.9 percent of revenue in the fourth quarter, down from 41.7 percent inthe third quarter. The same pattern of decreasing inventory replicated acrossvarious semiconductor customer segments during the same period: to 24.9 percentfor EMS providers, down from 26.7 percent- to 20.8 percent for originalequipment manufacturers in the storage segment, down from 21.5 percent- and to9.6 percent for handset makers, down from 13.8 percent.In the first quarter of 2012, however, suppliers saw order bookings fill up,allowing them to gain greater visibility into the supply chain. Book-to-billratios are also close to reaching parity, indicating more balanced supply-anddemand dynamics. Such developments, combined with anticipated higher demand forthe second quarter, led to a rise in inventory as a percentage of supplierrevenue during the first quarter, giving the market fresh reason to cheer.Chip Industry ChallengesDespite the improvement in market conditions, some problem areas do persist,however, especially in the memory segment.A common occurrence in the semiconductor industry is to bring too muchcapacity online to meet rising demand. This surge in capacity frequently isfollowed by a softening of demand that then leads to an inventory overhang andan inability to reduce production quickly enough. This in turn leads tooversupply.Memory companies, in particular, are historically prone to larger swings inoversupply and undersupply in response to shifting end demand, making thempotentially vulnerable.The analog semiconductor segment is another potential problem area, becausethe sector is exposed to markets -- such as industrial communicationsinfrastructure -- that are traditionally slower to rebound from cyclicaldownturns.Nonetheless, as overall semiconductor sales increase over the course of thisyear, the ratio of inventory to sales increasingly should come into alignment.The anticipated return to moderate demand will also give semiconductor suppliersan extra dose of confidence in knowing that their inventory levels areappropriate.
