­Japan's NEC announced today the development of technologies for high speed,indoor mobile communications using LTE femtocell base stations that minimizeradio signal interference between base stations by controlling the transmissionpower of radio signals.The company said that it is targeting the problems caused by radio signalinterference between both closely installed femtocell base stations andmacrocell base stations is reducing transmission speeds for all base stations.These newly developed technologies automatically adjust the transmissionpower of both femtocell base stations and the devices that connect to them. Thisis done in response to the transmission volume of the connecting device and thebase station's surrounding environment. This enables high speed indoor andoutdoor communications by curbing radio signal interference with macrocell basestations and allowing the high density installation of femtocell base stations.Going forward, NEC added that it aims to continue developing thesetechnologies and to provide new LTE femtocell base stations and operationalmanagement equipment.
­South Africa based Vodacom is facing a court battle in the DemocraticRepublic of Congo as it seeks to sell its majority 51% stake in the company.The minority shareholder, Congolese Wireless Network, which owns the other49% of the company is seeking a legal ruling to block the sale claiming thatthere are unpaid fees due.Vodacom and CWN have had a fraught relationship ever since Vodacom investedin the company back in May 2002. Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it has collaborated with Qualcommto conduct the industry's first successful interoperability test of the new3GPP standardized Release 8 Fast Dormancy feature. Unlike proprietary approachesto fast dormancy, the new standard allows operators to take full advantage ofsmart network features such as Cell_PCH without worrying that individual handsetsettings will ignore network controls.Smartphones are increasingly "always-on", with apps receiving frequentupdates and messages. This can cause batteries to drain fast. The proprietaryapproach to preserving battery life has been for smartphones to rapidlydisconnect from the network once information is sent or received. This is FastDormancy. The problem for operators is that the constant making and breaking ofconnections causes a huge increase in signaling traffic, which wastes networkresources and can mean fewer smartphones are able to connect.Nokia Siemens Networks' Cell_PCH solves this problem by putting phones intoa battery-preserving idle state, but maintaining a connection identity on thenetwork. Up until now using Cell_PCH in multivendor networks has been achallenge as no other vendor employs the standard technique, despite allsmartphones having built-in Cell_PCH capability. This test shows how smartphonescan act dynamically, exploiting Cell_PCH on Nokia Siemens Networks' smartnetworks or adjusting to Fast Dormancy on other vendors' traditional networks.The test was conducted at Nokia Siemens Networks' Smart Lab in Dallas usingNokia Siemens Networks' Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Radio NetworkController and Qualcomm's QSC7230TM smartphone optimized chipset.Nearly 100 operators worldwide have already deployed Nokia Siemens Networks'Cell_PCH functionality."We are committed to optimizing the end-to-end performance of smartphones,which means focusing on both mobile device battery life and on reducingsignaling traffic within the network," said Jan Hellman, head of the mobilebroadband program at Nokia Siemens Networks. "Our Cell_PCH functionality hasbeen delivering these benefits to operators for years, and the new Fast Dormancyfeature will ensure that handsets in the network can now use Cell_PCH where it'savailable."
